Windows 11 is a capable, visually refined operating system, but its default out-of-the-box configuration is aggressively monetized. From diagnostic telemetry beacons that transmit system performance data back to Microsoft servers, to targeted advertising identifiers and sponsored “recommendations” cluttering your Start menu, Windows operates more like an ad-supported software platform than a traditional operating system. Hardening your Windows 11 installation restores privacy, eliminates background network bloat, and reclaims CPU overhead.
Step 1: Disabling Diagnostic Telemetry and Diagnostic Data
Microsoft categorizes telemetry into “Required” and “Optional”. You should immediately restrict telemetry to the bare minimum:
- Open Settings → Privacy & security → Diagnostics & feedback.
- Toggle off Send optional diagnostic data.
- Toggle off Improve inking and typing recognition (this prevents Windows from transmitting your keyboard patterns and handwriting samples to cloud training models).
- Toggle off Tailored experiences (prevents Microsoft from using diagnostic data to push personalized ads and software recommendations).
- Scroll to Delete diagnostic data and click “Delete”.
Step 2: Purging Ads from the Start Menu, Explorer, and Lock Screen
Windows 11 injects sponsored apps and store promotions across multiple system interfaces. Turn them off sequentially:
- Start Menu: Go to Settings → Personalization → Start. Turn off Show recommendations for tips, shortcuts, new apps, and more.
- File Explorer: Open File Explorer, click the three dots (
...) → Options → View tab. Uncheck Show sync provider notifications. This disables OneDrive upsell popups inside your file directories. - Lock Screen: Navigate to Settings → Personalization → Lock screen. Change background from “Windows Spotlight” to “Picture”, and uncheck Get fun facts, tips, tricks, and more on your lock screen.
Step 3: Disabling the Unique Advertising ID
Every Windows user account is assigned an Advertising ID used by third-party store applications to build an advertising profile across apps. In Settings → Privacy & security → General, disable all four toggles:
- “Let apps show me personalized ads by using my advertising ID”
- “Let websites show me locally relevant content by accessing my language list”
- “Let Windows improve Start and search results by tracking app launches”
- “Show me suggested content in the Settings app”
Step 4: Automated Deep Cleaning with O&O ShutUp10++
For deep system-level registry modifications that cannot be accessed through standard Settings menus, the free, portable German utility O&O ShutUp10++ is the industry benchmark. Download and run the executable as Administrator, click Actions → Apply only recommended settings. It safely disables Cortana background telemetry, biometric data transmission, and Wi-Fi Sense without breaking Windows Update.
